Choosing a Wedding Caterer

Choosing a good wedding caterer is essential to having a wedding that your guests are sure to enjoy.  Some may argue that the food served at the wedding is the most important part of the wedding.  After all guests who enjoy their meal are likely to be in better spirits than guest who have eaten very little or who have not enjoyed their meal.

Onsite catering is common at many wedding venues. In fact, most of these do not allow offsite caterers to work at your wedding.  Since you will probably choose the location for their wedding before considering their catering options, it is important to ask about the venues policies regarding outside caterers.  

If you are set on a having your wedding at a location that provides on site catering, you need to test the food and maybe even request references. It is crucial that you choose the venue for your wedding not only on the appearance of the ball rooms but also on the quality of the food they offer.  Although a venue may have picturesque views and gorgeously decorated rooms if the food is not up to par you may want to consider a different venue in which to host your wedding. 

Start your search for a wedding caterer by talking to friends and relatives who used such a service in their weddings. Personal recommendations from someone you know and trust are much better than thumbing through the yellow pages. You might even talk to guests who attended these wedding.  

Another way to find wedding caterers is on the Internet. While you can search for ”wedding catering” using your favorite search engine, a better approach is to visit wedding forums where people discuss all aspects of wedding planning. A forum is the perfect place online to find answers to your questions. And if your particular questions hasn’t been raised by someone else, you can register at the forum and then ask it. Return a few days later and you should have several responses and recommendations for choosing a wedding caterer.

Narrow your choices down to three or four caterers. Call each one again an request a tasting session. If a caterer does not allow for a tasting session, strike them from your list. Take notes on what food options are available for each cadidate and what your opinion and that of your partner is about the food.

 While visiting catering services, ask to see photos of previous weddings catered. Look closely at decorating styles, display of food, serving trays and dishes, silverware, etc. Make sure the style of the caterer is compatible with your wedding decorating sheme.

Later, compare notes and make your choice. Take into consideration the wedding caterer’s experience, food options, display skills, personnel and your own feeling about them. While is does take some time and effort to choose a good wedding caterer, you will be richly rewarded with happy guests.
