If you’re not used to speaking in public, then the chances are that you’re going to be a little apprehensive about the best man wedding speech you will be called on to make at the wedding reception. Try not to worry too much about feeling apprehensive, or even terrified, about the propect of giving the speech, there are ways to overcome the nerves.
Doing all of the necessary preparation should mean that you’ve gathered together some material to help.
Start writing your speech as early before the wedding day as possible. The longer you work on it, the more polished it will sound and the more natural it will feel to you. There’ll be that much more chance to pick up a juicy anecdote about the groom if your speech is constantly being written, re-written and brushed up on.
Having the speech written down and in the correct order will also keep you organised and on track.
Find out what the tone of the speech is expected to be by the bride and groom. If they’re expecting a sensible acknowledgement of fellow wedding party members, then it’s probably not advisable to try to bring the house down with your take on classic one-liner comedy.
Remember that there is no room to be rude or crude with your comments and never set out to put people down or belittle them. Light-hearted roasting usually plays a part in the best man speech so, if you feel up to it, add the occasional dig, if it just doesn’t feel right it’s perfectly acceptable to leave it out.
Remember why you are giving the speech. Primarily you are responding to the groom’s toast on behalf of the bridesmaids. Thanking the groom for his kind words should ease you inoto your speech nicely.
All of the other wedding speeches are generally on the serious side, so the best man speech can often bring out the humor. It’s at this point that you can trot out any of the anecdotes you may have gathered about the groom. Keep it positive, keep it upbeat and there’s nothing wrong with keeping it brief if you are feeling uncomforatble.
When you’ve complimented both sides of the family, had your fun with the groom and praised the bride you can read out the letters and telegrams and wrap things up.
I should also add a word of advice about drinking alcohol before you begin your speech – don’t.
In all likelihood those nerves that have been dogging you in the lead up to your best man wedding speech will disappear once you’re standing and delivering.
If you’re still feeling terrified by the prospect of making that speech there are more resources to turn to, to ensure you get through the best man wedding speech.
